FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below you will find answers to commonly asked questions about Panhellenic sorority life and recruitment. If you cannot find the information needed here, please get in touch with us via our "Contact" page, or you can contact a specific officer by checking out our "About" page for their information.

What is Panhellenic?

The Panhellenic Council at Georgia State oversees the five Panhellenic Sororities on campus, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, and Zeta Tau Alpha. The Panhellenic Council works to promote unity and communication amongst these five chapters.

Why should I join a Panhellenic organization?

Sororities provide an endless support system and encourage lasting bonds. Joining a sorority exposes students to a large network of collegiate members and alumni that can help undergraduates transition successfully into college life and help them find opportunities that will enhance their development.

Sororities exhibit their values in action by contributing to worthy causes in the community and constantly striving for academic success. The value of intellectual curiosity does not end when one earns a diploma; rather it is held throughout a lifetime. With so many organizations to choose from, there is a home for everyone interested in joining our community.

Leadership

Service

Scholarship

Sisterhood

Developing leaders today for life after college is an important part of Greek involvement. Sorority members participate in a variety of programs that provide leadership development. There are many ways to be a leader in the Greek Community, including chapter or council officer positions, national or regional leadership conferences, campus-based leadership opportunities and committee involvement.

Service is a meaningful pillar of sorority involvement. It is perhaps the most personally rewarding of the pillars, as members are provided with opportunities to participate in hands-on volunteer work and implement philanthropic events to raise money for charitable causes. The opportunities ensure that sorority members will have an impact on their community and develop lifelong habits of giving back.

Academic excellence is a vital aspect of sorority life. On average, women involved in sororities earn a higher GPA than the GSU institutional average. Scholastic standards are important for each chapter and the community as a whole. Programming, incentives, recognition and ongoing support help fraternity and sorority members achieve academic success.

Joining a sorority is about building lifelong relationships that extend beyond ordinary friendships. Bonds of sisterhood are formed within an organization and provide GSU Greeks with a home away from home, mentorship, career networking and a sense of community at a large university. Sorority members enjoy lifelong connections that can provide support and celebration in life’s significant moments.

What is Philanthropy?

Every sorority values service and giving back to their community. Each sorority has its own cause they give to, and women will have the opportunity to learn about each cause on day one of recruitment. The National Panhellenic Council has its own sorority, Circle of Sisterhood, which aims to raise money to support women's education, both within and outside of the United States.

What is Meet the Greeks and why should I go?

At Meet the Greeks, the Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents of Recruitment of each sorority will introduce themselves to the women going through recruitment. The women will have the opportunity to gain an early perspective on what makes each organization unique and why greek life is special to these individual greek women. There will be time for a Q&A with each sorority. While Meet the Greeks is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged. You do not have to be signed up for recruitment to attend. Anyone who is interested or already registered is welcomed. Meet the Greeks will be held on Tuesday, September 3rd at 6pm in Speaker's Auditorium.

What is Orientation? Do I have to attend?

Recruitment Orientation is mandatory for all women going through recruitment, only women who are signed up for recruitment are permitted to attend on Thursday, September 5th. At Orientation, the women will learn more in-depth what the recruitment process will look like and what to expect each day. The women will be divided into groups which will be led by recruitment counselors (also referred to as Rho Chi’s in greek lingo). These groups will act as a source of support and communication to the women as they search for their place in one of our five Panhellenic Sororities.

Do I need a recommendation letter for each chapter?

No, recommendation letters are not required for Georgia State's Panhellenic recruitment process.

How can I make sure these chapters get to know me?

Your Recruitment Counselors are going to be a great resource to help you figure out how to ask meaningful questions that convey your personal values while also learning about the chapter’s values. You will learn more about our values-based recruitment process at the Recruitment Orientation on Thursday, September 5th.

What do I wear to recruitment?

DAY ONE: The advised attire for day one is to show off your personal style. It's the most casual of the three days but you still want to dress to impress!

DAY TWO: This day is more dressed up. Think "Sunday best"--sundresses, skirts, and jumpsuits are common on day two.

DAY THREE: All women going through recruitment are required to wear all black. Day three is the dressiest of the three days. Bid day is held at the end of the day on day three. Women will want to bring a change of comfortable clothes for bid day. Most important of all, dress in clothes that show off your unique self!

For more information and ideas on what to wear, check out our "Recruitment" highlight on our Instagram page.
